Man indicted in death of 2-month-old

May. 14, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

CATLETTSBURG, Ky. -- A special Boyd County grand jury Monday indicted a Powell County, Ky., man on a charge of murder in the death of a 2-month-old and an 18-year-old Westwood man on an assault charge in the knifing of a 16-year-old earlier this month, Commonwealth Attorney David Justice said.

Brett R. Thompson, 18, of Stanton, Ky., was charged with the murder of a 2-month-old girl at a home in Westwood on May 4, Justice said. He is charged with hitting the 9 pound, one-ounce baby in the back of the head, killing him, Justice said. The child was suffering from a stomach virus, he said.

The sheriff's department responded to a report of an unresponsive child in the 100 block of Caroline Drive in Westwood. The infant was transported to King's Daughters' Medical Center and was pronounced dead by Boyd County Deputy Coroner Ralph Beadle.

An autopsy the following day at the Kentucky State Medical Examiner's Office determined the death was a homicide as a result of blunt force trauma. The infant had multiple head and brain injuries causing the death.

Thompson had been staying at the home of his girlfriend in the Westwood area at the time, Justice said.

No bond has been set in the case. Thompson currently is lodged in the Boyd County Detention Center in Catlettsburg.

If convicted, Thompson faces a prison sentence of from 20 years to life in prison, according to Justice.

In an unrelated case, Alec E. Burress, 18, of Newsome Street, Westwood, was indicted on a charge of first-degree assault of a 16-year-old in Westwood on May 5.

Burress was armed with two pocket knives and stabbed the other teenager five times, once in the chest, puncturing his chest. The stabbing victim was transported to King's Daughters before being transferred to a Huntington hospital. The name and condition of the victim isn't being released because he's a juvenile, Justice said.

The stabbing took place in the 2100 block of Main street in Westwood.

Burress currently is lodged in the detention center in lieu of $100,000 bond, Justice said.
