17th St. houses, car hit by gunfire
HUNTINGTON -- Three houses and a vehicle were struck by a spray of gunfire early Thursday in Huntington.
Two parents and four children, ranging in age from 6 to 20, hit the ground to avoid being struck, according to incident reports filed at the Huntington Police Department.
The shootings happened about 1 a.m. in the 1000 block of 17th Street.
One of the adults watched events develop from her front porch, according to the report. She told police she had spotted as many as five men acting strangely near her house. One man passed by, while a second stopped on the opposite side of the street. Both of them kept looking at her residence and the three remaining men.
The report states gunfire started once the following trio stopped adjacent to the house. Each had walked south from 10th Avenue.
Reports indicate multiple shots struck houses located at 1011, 1015 and 1017 17th St.
At least four bullet holes were discovered in a vehicle parked nearby. It also had a shattered rear windshield and driver's side window.
Huntington Police Capt. Rick Eplin said detectives had not determined the circumstances that led to the shooting. He speculates it likely involved a dispute. He said detectives believe the vehicle and at least two of the three houses were unintended targets.
Eplin said detectives tried to conduct interviews in the area later Thursday morning. They reported virtually no success as many were uncooperative. He urges anyone with information to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 304-696-4420.
Officers remained at the scene collecting evidence until at least 5 a.m., according to Cabell County 911.
No arrests and no injuries were reported.
The incident remains under investigation.
