Fit Fest '10 scheduled for Saturday at park
HUNTINGTON -- FitFest '10 is planned for later this week ,and it offers a second annual 5K Run/Walk, Kids' Run and community activities to raise funds for the Paul Ambrose Trail for Health (PATH).
Last year's FitFest drew a crowd of more than 1,000, and organizers are hoping for more this year. The event runs from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Ritter Park. There will be health screenings and demos, including "Boot Camp" demos from the HIT Center; U.S. Army Reserves rock-climbing wall; the Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine (MUSOM) "Let's Get Moving" Program; St. Mary's TIPS free bike helmet giveaway; Huntington Junior League's "Kids in the Kitchen" Program; Zumba, Kids' Zumba, Cardio and Yoga demos; Little Victories Animal Rescue; and face painting. The Robert C. Byrd Rural Health Center's Mobile Unit and volunteer medical professionals will provide emergency and triage support. Vendors include Subway, Schlotzky's Deli and Royal Family Kids Camp Lemonade Stand.
Eighty percent of the funds raised will go toward construction of PATH. The remaining 20 percent will be put into a fund to help with maintenance and upkeep.

Major FitFest '10 sponsors include the Rahall Transportation Institute Foundation Inc.; the Paul Ambrose Charitable Foundation; Cabell Huntington Hospital; St. Mary's Medical Center; Huntington Internal Medicine Group; Marshall University; and the Huntington Greater Parks and Recreation District.
To register for the events, you can go online to www.active.com until Wednesday, Sept. 8, for $18. There will also be registration on the day of the event from 3 to 5:45 p.m. for $25.
The following streets will be closed at 5:15 p.m. on Saturday: North Boulevard from 8th Street to 7th Street West; and 11th Avenue from 5th Street to 7th Street West. Streets will reopen at 7:35 p.m.
Upon completion, the PATH will be a 26-mile bicycle and pedestrian trail system that will span from West Huntington to Guyandotte, and link communities to encourage a healthier population and provide safe pathways to work, schools and area businesses. The trail system is named after the late Dr. Paul Ambrose, a promising young physician from Barboursville whose work focused on preventing and reducing childhood obesity in rural areas. Ambrose died Sept. 11, 2001, when American Airlines Flight 77 was crashed into the Pentagon.
