W.Va. Drug Take-Back Day event set for Saturday

Apr. 26, 2013 @ 08:31 AM

CHARLESTON — State and federal authorities are teaming up for the sixth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day this weekend.

The federal Drug Enforcement Administration oversees the event, which began three years ago. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at locations across West Virginia, including the state Capitol in Charleston.

State and local law enforcement agencies will collect unused medication and safely dispose of it to prevent potential abuse by people who find it in the trash. Proper disposal also protects the environment.

The DEA says prescription drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a doctor's supervision, and can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose and addiction.

Prescription drug abuse is a widespread problem in West Virginia and nationally.
