Bill would ax fundraising during W.Va. session
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Sen. Mike Green is proposing a bill that would prohibit legislators from raising money for their re-election campaigns during the legislative session.
The Raleigh County Democrat says several lawmakers have already held fundraisers during the current 60-day session, which began Jan. 11. Last year, several candidates held fundraisers ahead of a special election for governor during the session.
This year, half of the Senate seats and all House of Delegate seats are up for election. Voters will also choose a governor to fill a full, four-year term.
Green believes fundraising during the session taints the legislative process, which should be open and transparent.
Green says lobbyists and special interest groups may feel pressure to contribute to campaigns in order to gain support for their bills during the session.
