Embattled Mason Co. sheriff files for re-election
HUNTINGTON — David Anthony has filed for re-election to his post as sheriff, despite an continuing effort to oust him from office.
Anthony, 42, filed for paperwork Thursday to seek the Democratic nomination in this year’s primary for sheriff.
The filing comes as Anthony faces a 42-count indictment and a movement from county commissioners to remove him from office.
The indictment charges Anthony with felony wanton endangerment, child neglect creating, unauthorized use of a government purchasing card and fraudulent schemes, along with misdemeanor counts of domestic assault, shooting near a dwelling and embezzlement by a public official.
Anthony pleaded not guilty to the indictment earlier this month. Trial is tentatively scheduled for April 10.
County commissioners expect to file paperwork in a period of days to begin their effort to remove Anthony from office. They have said the criminal charges are too weighty to allow Anthony to finish out his term.
Anthony’s opponents for the Democratic nomination are Gregory Powers and James Wills, of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; Donnie Knapp of Evans, W.Va.; and John Paul Casey of Apple Grove, W.Va.
Those seeking the Republican nomination are Gordon Clark of West Columbia, W.Va.; Curtis C. McConihay of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; and Joseph Frank of Leon, W.Va.
The filing period to seek elective office ends Saturday, Jan. 28.
