Limits of rabies vaccine triggering precautions
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — County health officials in northeast Ohio are urging residents not to handle wild animals and to learn what to do if scratched or bitten by a pet.
The warnings follow reports of a recent limited supply of the human rabies vaccine in the United States.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta says the limited supply isn’t a concern to average citizens and no one needing the vaccine will go without.
Mahoning County health official John Venglarcik (ven-GLARR’-chik) says it’s important to know when the vaccine is really needed. He says some health departments have dispersed vaccines in situations where it might not have been necessary if people had known more about rabies exposure.
The CDC recommends avoiding wildlife and vaccinating pets and livestock.
