MCTC hosting Silent Saturday
HUNTINGTON -- Marshall Community & Technical College’s American Sign Language Student Association is hosting a Silent Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Cabell Hall, Room 101.
Silent Saturday helps students develop new understandings of the values, systems and beliefs of the deaf community. The day will consist of quiet activities such as storytelling, poetry, comedy, games and songs, all done using sign language.
Leigh-Ann Brewer, ASL program coordinator, said the day should open a lot of eyes to the life of a deaf person.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students and deaf community members to experience the beauty of American Sign Language and the culture of the deaf,” Brewer said.
But participants need to bring plenty of nickels. For every word that slips out, they must donate 5 cents to the American Sign Language Student Association.
MCTC offers a one-year certificate in deaf studies and a two-year associate’s degree in American sign language. Studying American sign language at MCTC means exploring and gaining insight into the deaf culture and community while becoming fluent in ASL communication through the use of manual signs, facial expression and body movement. The
ASL program prepares students to communicate effectively with deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the workplace and community.
Cabell Hall is located on the corner on 7th aAvenue and 20th Street. Lunch will be provided. For more information, please contact Leigh-Ann Brewer by phone 304-696-3752 or by e-mail at brewer13@marshall.edu.
