June 10, 2009 @ 07:50 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia farmers could earn a little extra cash for going green.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is offering between $8 and $350 an acre to certified organic producers and farmers transitioning to organic production.

In West Virginia, $383,992 is available this year through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program.

Soil conservationist LaRae Baker in Mason and Putnam counties says core practices include crop rotation, prescribed grazing and pest management.

Farmers using organic means to control pests may be eligible to receive $20 to $350 an acre.
Crop rotation payments range from $8 to $50 an acre.

Applications are available at local USDA offices or online at www.wv.nrcs.usda.gov.

The deadline is Friday.
