3 R’s and an F: W.Va. students get finance education

June 11, 2009 @ 09:03 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — State officials wants West Virginia’s youth to avoid the financial mistakes that adults make.

The West Virginia Treasurer’s Office, the state Board of Education and other agencies are working to integrate personal finance education into the core curriculum at schools.

Agencies participating in the NetWorth program will work with about 75 schools in 32 counties. Students will learn how to balance a checkbook, manage credit, invest money and even plan for retirement.

State Treasurer John Perdue says it’s critical that these lessons are learned early.

NetWorth program manager Lynn Bennett says the program doesn’t require additional classes or curriculum. For example, calculating interest could be integrated into math classes.
