W.Va. man gets prison time for role in gambling ring

January 14, 2009 @ 09:12 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The former owner of Drummy’s Bar and Grill in St. Albans has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for being a go-between in a gambling ring that stretched from Welch to Dunbar.

Derrick Jay Drumheller of St. Albans pleaded guilty in August to placing bets on behalf of Welch pharmacist Saad Kamil Deeb with a bookie in Dunbar.

The 48-year-old Drumheller says he never made money from the transactions, but Deeb would send him moonshine or buy him dinner.

U.S. District Judge John Copenhaver Jr. also ordered Drumheller to pay a $10,000 fine on top of more than $69,000 in back taxes he’s already paid.

Deeb was placed on five years’ probation in August, including one year on home confinement.
