Beshear to ask Obama for help with Ky. budget
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Gov. Steve Beshear will be meeting with President-elect Barack Obama and other governors this week and he says he’ll be asking for federal help with the state budget.
Beshear says Kentucky could use some help funding the state’s Medicaid program. He says the state could also use some assistance in paying for its unemployment assistance program and new infrastructure projects.
State revenue is currently off pace by an estimated $456 million between now and the end of June. Over the next year and a half, Kentucky’s general fund shortfall is estimated to be more than $1.3 billion behind.
The governor has asked public universities and state agencies to propose how they would slash 4 percent out of their current budgets.
