Byrd snags $200K for historic W.Va. theater
WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) — The bid to fully restore Wheeling’s famed Capitol Theatre has gotten a recent boost thanks to West Virginia’s senior U.S. senator.
Sen. Robert C. Byrd included $200,000 for the restoration of the 81-year-old theater in a bill that President Barack Obama signed into law last week.
Hydie Friend, director of the Wheeling National Heritage Area Corp., says the money will go toward weatherproofing the building’s terra cotta facade and roof.
There’s still a long way to go before the building, long known as the Capitol Music Hall, is fully restored, though.
Backers of the project say they’ll need roughly $3.3 million over several years to complete the work.
