Musical Arts Guild giving a free concert tonight at 8 at Jeslyn

November 05, 2009 @ 02:02 PM

HUNTINGTON — The seasons are changing and the Musical Arts Guild isn’t going to let the occasion go by unnoticed.

As autumn slowly gives way to winter, the Musical Arts Guild is celebrating all of the calendar’s changes with “Seasons of Song,” a new concert directed by Don Williams, musical artist in residence at the Huntington Museum of Art.

The guild will be giving performances at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Jeslyn Performing Arts Center, 1030 4th Ave., in downtown Huntington.

The guild’s second concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at the Huntington Museum of Art, 2033 McCoy Road, Huntington.

The concerts are free and open to the public.

At the concerts, the guild will announce the winners of the three $1,000 scholarships that are awarded to Marshall students in the areas of voice, drama and instrument studies.

Jean Dean, a longtime member of the guild, said they’re offering the two concerts for free as a token of appreciation to the community.

“We are doing things a little different than we’ve done,” Dean said. “We’re offering two free concerts, and in these times of economic distress we felt like it was something good to do.”

Dean said the guild, which has been around since 1963, has felt the love from the community.
In fact, for the first time in its history the guild has its own sound system thanks to donations by the Cabell County Commission, the Foundation of the Tri-State and Larry Tweel, as well as a good deal from the folks at Mack and Dave’s.

Dean said the program, “Seasons of Songs,” directed by Williams, has been a delight to perform.

The guild will be accompanied by pianist Leslie Roush and her husband, Terry, on bass.
“It’s basically taking the four seasons of the year and singing three or four songs with each,”

Dean said. “Don has picked some really well known songs such as ‘Autumn Leaves’ and some lesser known songs which makes it a really good program.
