W.Va. police charge man in copper theft

November 24, 2009 @ 07:30 AM

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia State Police have arrested a man they say stole up to $10,000 worth of copper wire from two different phone companies.

Michael Craig Jarrell was arrested Saturday and charged with stealing copper wire from Verizon and AT&T Mobile Communications in Cabin Creek on several occasions this month.

Jarrell was held at the Southern Regional Jail but was released Monday.

A telephone listing for the 23-year-old Gallagher resident could not be immediately found.

West Virginia saw a surge in copper theft in 2007 and 2008 as the price of the metal soared.

Reports of thefts dropped after the economy went into a tailspin at the end of last year, but police say thefts are picking up again.
