Two injured, one arrested in domestic shooting
ROME TOWNSHIP — A man and his adult nephew received gunshot wounds amid a domestic argument that turned violent Monday night in Lawrence County, Ohio.
Clifton West, 20, was arrested and charged with first-degree aggravated burglary, two counts of felonious assault and a single count of vandalism, all felonies, said Lawrence County Detective Aaron Bollinger.
The two shooting victims were taken to Cabell Huntington Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Bollinger said. The older victim was father to West’s girlfriend.
Lawrence County 911 received word of the shooting about 11:25 p.m. Monday. It occurred in the 1000 block of Wallace Lane, off Athalia Road in Rome Township north of Proctorville.
Bollinger said investigators believe a verbal dispute preceded the shooting at the victims’ house. He described the incident as a domestic situation in which alcohol was a factor. The father was there with his wife, their nephew and their daughter. West lived with their daughter next door.
The Sheriff’s Office believes a man walked away from the verbal dispute and obtained a 12-gauge shotgun from next door. Two shots were fired in the neighboring home, before the gunman returned to the scene of the verbal dispute. The gunman fired two gunshots into the victims’ front door. He then entered the house and fired two to three more gunshots.
The vandalism charge was related to West allegedly kicking out a window in a Sheriff’s Office cruiser.
The two women were not injured, Bollinger said.
