W.Va.’s Manchin will assist needy at meal

November 25, 2009 @ 07:30 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Gov. Joe Manchin is starting his Thanksgiving early, but giving a hand to some people in need.

The governor and first lady Gayle Manchin will be on hand at the Union Mission Crossroads homeless shelter in Charleston on Wednesday.

The state’s first couple will assist with a Thanksgiving meal distribution at the shelter, which usually serves between 150 and 200 meals per day.

Last weekend was the big pre-Thanksgiving food giveaway for Union Mission. About 10,000 families in 19 counties received food baskets distributed by Union Mission.

Union Mission President Rex Whiteman says the need is greater than anything he’s seen in 40 years.
