W.Va. state workers get Christmas Eve off

November 25, 2009 @ 07:50 AM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia state workers got a Christmas gift from Gov. Joe Manchin about a month before the holiday.

Manchin has declared an additional half day off on Christmas Eve, which is already a half day on the state calendar.

That means state workers will get the whole day off.

Manchin says he wants to give state employees more time with family, whether that means traveling, preparing for a celebration or something else.

The additional time off won’t be charged to state workers’ annual leave.

The declaration, though, does not create a legal holiday, meaning it doesn’t affect people working in private business or local government.
