MSHA schedules black lung disease sessions
CHARLESTON — The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration is planning to unveil its plan to reduce cases of black lung disease at a series of public events.
MSHA says it’s scheduled sessions starting Dec. 3 at the National Mine Health and Safety Academy in Beaver. Wednesday’s announcement includes additional sessions in Pennsylvania on Dec. 7, Virginia on Dec. 10 and Kentucky on Dec. 11.
New MSHA director Joe Main has made combating the debilitating disease a priority. While deadly, black lung is considered preventable by reducing dust levels in coal mines.
Black lung cases decreased for three decades in the U.S. But federal researchers have evidence the disease may be making a comeback in parts of West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
