American Municipal Power reconsiders Ohio plant
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — American Municipal Power has scrapped plans to build a coal-fired power plant in southern Ohio because of soaring construction costs.
The 1,000-megawatt coal plant would have provided electricity to parts of Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia.
Company officials say the projected cost of building the plant had jumped from $3.3 billion to $4 billion.
The plant had been criticized by environmentalist groups since it was announced six years ago.
The company says that opposition had nothing to do with its decision. American Municipal Power is looking into the development of a natural gas-fired power plant instead.
The Natural Resources Defense Council says Natural gas plants emit about half the carbon dioxide as a coal plant.
