Voters reconsider table games for W.Va. casino
CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) — The arguments over table games at the Charles Town Races & Slots are mainly the same as they were two years ago: Jobs, money and morality.
But supporters of a Dec. 5 referendum to allow blackjack, craps and poker at the only West Virginia casino without table games say it’s not just about new jobs.
They say it’s also about protecting existing jobs.
Supporters fear gamblers will stay closer to home in Pennsylvania and Maryland if the Eastern Panhandle track doesn’t distinguish itself from an ever-growing number of slot parlors.
Opponents, however, worry about traffic, overcrowded schools and high-rise hotels, as well as the notion of easy money they believe gambling teaches children.
Early voting at the Jefferson County courthouse ends Monday.
