Fasting W.Va. activist resumes vigil after arrest

December 01, 2009 @ 05:23 PM

CHARLESTON — His arrest on a recent trespassing charge was only a temporary obstacle for an environmental activist fasting at the state Capitol over mountaintop removal mining.

Roland Micklem returned briefly to the governor’s reception room Tuesday after pleading not guilty to the misdemeanor in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

The arrest stems from an October march in protest of mountaintop removal mining. Micklem had stopped to talk to a security guard at Walker Machinery in Belle He says he didn’t think he was trespassing.

Micklem says he didn’t know there was a warrant for his arrest until Tuesday.

The 81-year-old began his fast Monday as a gesture of mourning over surface mining.
