Car club holds show, donates to Veterans Home
BARBOURSVILLE -- Residents of the West Virginia Veterans Home in Barboursville were treated to a classic car show and a trailer filled with thousands of dollars of items being donated to them Monday.
Jim Hayner, the marketing coordinator for BB's Car Club out of South Point, Ohio, said they were able to donate between $8,500 and $10,000 worth of items, thanks to two months of collecting donations.
"I think between the way we presented and when you tell people it's for veterans, they jump right in," Hayner said.
Items ranged from toiletries to hats and T-shirts to fishing reels. There also were about 100 movies on VHS.
They also brought out several classic cars that the veterans were able to get in, check out and get some photos.
"Some of us in the car club are veterans. And you hear about the home and think there are people there who are forgotten," Hayner said.
The reactions from the 100 men and one woman who live there ranged from tears to laughter to smiles.
"It was priceless," Hayner added.
BB's Car Club prides itself on its charitable giving, which is in the thousands each year. They do an annual toy drive for children that runs from February through December. Last year, about $5,000 worth of toys were given out.
"We want people to know we care about them," he said.
Hayner added that the July Cruz In at the Kyova Mall in Ashland, from 4-9 p.m. Saturday, July 24, will have the theme "Salute to America" and be dedicated to active military personnel and veterans.
Registration is $5. More information is available at www.bbscarclub.com.
