W.Va. museum set to open June 20
CHARLESTON — West Virginia's new state museum will feature more than 300 million years of history and nearly 6,000 artifacts when it opens in June.
A "show path" will take visitors through exhibits, divided into 16 time periods, that include an ancient forest and a soda shop from 1954.
One part of the 24,000-square-foot museum will emulate a coal mine, including the coldness of the underground air.
Culture and History Deputy Commissioner Jacqueline Proctor says the $18 million museum has three times as many artifacts as the old museum, which closed in 2004.
The museum is being built in the basement of the Cultural Center in Charleston. Its grand opening is set for June 20, West Virginia Day.
