HAZELTON, W.Va. (AP) — A union official says a correctional officer at the U.S. Penitentiary at Hazelton has been stabbed by an inmate.

American Federation of Government Employees Council of Prisons Local 420 president Jared Henson says Officer Timothy Norris was stabbed with a homemade metal weapon on Saturday.

Henson tells media outlets that Norris was taken to a hospital in Morgantown.

Norris’ condition wasn’t available Sunday. Henson says he’s expected to survive.

Henson says the inmate was serving a sentence for robbery and faces a murder charge stemming from another incident.

The inmate’s name hasn’t been released.

Henson says Norris hadn’t had any prior problems with the inmate.
