W.Va. Ed board member resigns over firing

Dec. 28, 2012 @ 04:03 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A West Virginia Board of Education member has followed through on her vow to resign over the firing of the state schools superintendent.

Jenny Phillips says she can no longer serve on a board that shows a lack of regard for a person's reputation and livelihood.

Phillips and board member Priscilla Haden dissented when the board voted last month to dismiss Jorea Marple as schools superintendent.

Other board members have cited a desire to change direction. The board had unanimously selected Marple for that job in February 2011.

Phillips told Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin of her resignation in a Thursday letter. She wrote that the board displayed a lack of caring or consideration.

Phillips had been reappointed to the board in 2007 for a term that ends in 2016.
