Food decline shrinks deer population at Twin Falls
MULLENS, W.Va. (AP) — Plant life at Twin Falls Resort State Park is rebounding as the deer population declines.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, visitors reported seeing up to 250 deer in the park.
Now, Twin Falls superintendent Scott Durham says visitors might see 15 deer.
Visitors also will see wild flowers that haven’t appeared in the park in years.
Durham tells The Register-Herald that the park’s large deer herd over-browsed its food supply. The deer responded to a shrinking food supply by reducing reproduction.
Durham says the deer are surviving now on grass, which has a low nutritional value.
He says it’s all part of the natural cycle. The deer herd will increase when the food supply improves.
