W.Va. State Police out in force this weekend
SOUTH CHARLESTON — West Virginia State Police is increasing patrols on the state highways today in an effort to help keep travelers safe on July 4, the second deadliest day of the year on America’s roadways.
State police will work with two national campaigns to ensure the safety of the commuters during the Fourth of July holiday. The campaigns are Operation C.A.R.E., (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Over the Limit, Under Arrest.”
The targeted period of the national campaigns is from Friday to Sunday. State police will focus on strict enforcement of DUI, reckless driving, speeding, failure to buckle up and child restraint violations as part of these campaigns.
State highway safety organizations such as the Governor’s Highway Safety Program and the Commission on Drunk Driving Prevention have provided funding to increase patrols and continue efforts to curb DUI related crashes and offenses.
Motorists can help law enforcement by reporting reckless drivers and stranded motorists. Dial *SP (*77) on any cellular phone in West Virginia. The call will be routed to the nearest state police detachment where an available trooper can respond to the situation.
