Boy Scout leaders to visit Huntington today

July 14, 2009 @ 11:06 AM

HUNTINGTON — It's nearly impossible to miss: a 32-foot-long motor home adorned with the Boy Scouts of America oath and a "A Century of Values" mural.

Tuesday, the scouts will be making a stop at Camp Arrowhead in Huntington. They are expected to roll in at about 2 p.m. and will stay for several hours.

It is just one of more than 300 stops scheduled as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of the scouting organization. The goal is to visit every Boy Scout council in the United States.

"It's an amazing feat this volunteer team is trying to accomplish over the year," said Lawrence A. Bystran, the Western Massachusetts Council's executive director in a written statement.

The "A Century of Values" road trip began Feb. 8 in Laingsburg, Mich., and is scheduled to end in Irving, Texas at the National Boy Scout Museum on Feb. 8, 2010, the 100th anniversary of the organization. Fourteen teams of Boy Scout volunteers are traveling around the country.

"We're going coast to coast and border to border," said Hanson M. Lee, of Troy, Mich., Team 6 leader. "It gives us a chance to meet different scouters throughout the country. It's nice to see we have a lot in common. There's a lot of pride in the 100th anniversary that's coming up."

"It's a good way to show off scouting to everyone in the United States," said 11-year-old David E. Nawrocki, a member of Troop 1849.

The motor home will be donated to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. More information about the centennial celebration can be found at www.acenturyofvalues.org.
