Man charged with abusing disabled wife

Apr. 19, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- A 50-year-old man was arrested Wednesday charged with abusing his wife, a woman who can hardly speak and is confined to a wheelchair.

The incident happened in early April at the couple's home in the 1400 block of Columbia Avenue. Their adult children left the residence April 3 and returned two days later, April 5, to find their mother with a black right eye and various other bruises, according to a criminal complaint filed in Cabell County Magistrate Court.

A warrant, issued April 14 and executed Wednesday, charges Kerry S. Maynard with felony abuse/neglect of an incapacitated adult. He was arraigned and then detained at the Western Regional Jail on a $20,000 bond.

When the sons inquired about her injuries, their mother pointed to the room where their father was located and confirmed he had hit her, the complaint states. Doctors then diagnosed her with four fractured ribs.

The woman, when interviewed by police, again identified Maynard as her attacker. She suffers after a stroke and experiences seizures, which make it very difficult for her to speak, according to the complaint.
