Remains found near Ky. lake confirmed as missing man

Apr. 19, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

ASHLAND -- Human skeletal remains that were found near Grayson Lake last fall have been positively identified as an Olive Hill, Ky., man, who was reported missing more than a year-and-a-half ago.

Detectives with the Kentucky State Police confirmed the remains found near Clifty Creek at the lake were that of Nathan R. Barker, 21, who was reported missing in July 2011, according to a press release.

Authorities began searching for Barker after his vehicle was found wrecked and abandoned near the junction of Ky. 7 and Ky. 986.

Upon the discovery of the remains in October 2012, investigators determined Barker's death was the result of an accidental fall from a cliff.

The evidence, including autopsy findings, scene examination and cellphone records indicated the death was accidental.

Investigators retrieved Barker's phone, and after it was repaired by technicians, they found that Barker had attempted to send several text messages describing his vehicle accident. He said in the texts that he was walking in a wooded area near the accident scene in an attempt to find help, and he also indicated his unfamiliarity with the area.

That area was where Barker's remains were found, and the autopsy results said his injuries were consistent of a fall from a cliff.

No foul play is suspected in Barker's death, and investigators have determined there is no connection with Barker's death and any other ongoing criminal investigation.
