Firefighters to raise funds for Relay for Life

Apr. 19, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

ROME TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Rome Township volunteer firefighters are old hands in seeking public donations. On Saturday, however, they'll be out collecting funds for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

The firefighters established a Relay for Life team called the Rome Volunteer Fire Department Fire Walkers, said Joe Burgess, fire chief.

The benefit is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the intersection of County Road 107 and County Road 411 at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.

"This is personal," Burgess said in a prepared release. "We've had firefighters and family members of firefighters who have succumbed to cancer or who have fought and survived due to advances in research.

"Cancer among firefighters is prevalent, and we want to do our part, not only to focus attention on the issue, but to do something about it," he said. "This is just another way we as firefighters choose to give back."

Firefighters face known carcinogens in the course of their job, Burgess said, giving them a greater risk than the general population for developing cancer.

That's a good motivation for the donation drive, Burgess said.

"Like so many other individuals and teams do each year, we wanted to pull together and do our part in the fight against cancer," Burgess said. "Neighbors helping neighbors goes beyond just providing emergency response."
