Healing Field to be on display starting Saturday

Sep. 06, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- The Greater Huntington Park & Recreation District and Spring Hill Cemetery will host The Healing Field this month.

The Healing Field is a display of American flags honoring the memories of lost loved ones, veterans and victims. The Field will be on display from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. each Sunday from Saturday, Sept. 7, until Sunday, Sept. 15. This is the third year the Field has been displayed in Huntington.

West Virginia's only Healing Field in Huntington recognizes the victims of Sept. 11, as well as the lives lost in the Marshall plane crash of 1970, veterans of the Armed Forces and lost loved ones.

Community members are welcome to purchase a flag. The flags are added to the field and then are available for pickup after war . Proceeds from the sale of flags help pay for the Spring Hill Cemetery Memorial Bell Tower that will be unveiled at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11.

The tower is located near the grave of Paul Ambrose, who grew up in Huntington, the son of Ken and Sharon Ambrose. He was a physician working on public health issues at the national level who was killed on American Airlines Flight 77, which was hijacked by terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001, and crashed into the Pentagon. He was 32.

To purchase a flag, or for more information, call 304-696-5954 or visit www.ghprd.org.
