JEAN ELLEN CHANEY, 71, of Salt Rock, wife of Jack Chaney, died Wednesday at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, is in charge of arrangements.
John Franklin Conkright, 81, of Huntington, father of Brenda Saunders and Marsha Fenstermaker, died Monday at Huntington Health and Rehabilitation. He was a retired business owner/decorator. There will be no visitation or public services. Reger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
LaVERNE PERRY CRIPPLE, 75, of Ironton, widow of George Cripple, died Wednesday at Hospice Care Center, Ashland. She retired from K-Mart. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Steen Funeral Home, 13th Street Chapel, Ashland. Burial will follow at Zoar Cemetery, Coal Grove. PAUL DANIEL DALTON, 89, of Ironton, died Tuesday at Hospice Care Center, Ashland. He retired as a welder for Ironton Coke Plant and was a Air Force W.W.II. veteran. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery. Visitation will be after 12:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Clifford Carroll Gibson, 71, of Milton, passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2010, after a short illness in the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington. Funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Rev. Ray Sovine officiating. Burial will follow in Ball Cemetery, Kilgore Creek, Milton. He was born Dec. 31, 1938, in Milton, a son of the late Cline and Clara (Davis) Gibson. He is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, Eunice Kay (Akers) Gibson; four daughters, Carol and David Smith, Ruth and Phil Jenkins, Mary Smith and Georgette McNeese; one son, Sherman "Butch" and Robin Gibson; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Wilma Bird, Faye and Don Cobb, and Maxine Bowen; two brothers, Glen and Betty Gibson, and Lester "Doug" Gibson; many nieces and nephews; two new and special friends, Josh Burden and Philip Skeens. PAUL JOHNSON JR., 80, of Ashland, widower of Dorothy Rae Johnson, died Wednesday at home. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Steen Funeral Home, 13th Street Chapel, Ashland. GARY JONES, 61, of Chesapeake, Ohio, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, July 27, 2010, in Holzer Medical Center. Gary was born Jan. 31, 1949, in Huntington, W.Va., a son of the late Hurley and Evia O. Benson Jones. He was a self-employed contractor and a member of Sybene Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and trustee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Jean Jones. Gary is survived by five children, Gary A. Jones Jr. and his wife Misty, Matthew Jones and his fiancé Anna Ball, Daniel Jones and his fiancé Amanda Nance, Nikki LeGrand and her husband Billy, and P.J. Jones and his wife Amanda; nine grandchildren, Evan Allen Jones, Leslie Lorene Jones, Hunter Alen LeGrand, Joshua Mikel LeGrand, Colton Lee Ray Jones, Caitlyn Rae Jones, Dakota Corns, Ethan King and Owen King; two brothers, Paul and Rick Jones; and two sisters, Ramona Jones and Sheila Wilkes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to help with expenses. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Sybene Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor D.L. Webb officiating. Burial will follow in Rome Cemetery, Proctorville. HARRIETT (MURRAY) JONES, 82, of Crooked Creek, widow of Ray Murray and Archie Jones, died Wednesday at Logan Regional Medical Center. She was a department manager for Kmart. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Crooked Creek Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens, Godby. George Thomas Marshall, 67, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away suddenly on a job site on July 27, 2010, while doing what he loves. George was an extraordinary man born on April 7, 1943, in Sutton, W.Va., to parents James and Erie Marshall. George was student body president and homecoming king at Sutton High School. He graduated from Glenville State College in 1964 with a degree in chemistry, where he was a member of the TKA fraternity, president and co-founder of the Holy Roller’s Court. He married his first wife Marilyn in 1968. George was a chemist at INCO Alloys for 27 years. After retirement, George started his own plumbing business and became a well respected plumber throughout the Tri-State area. George was an avid hunter and fisher, and an active member of the Three Rivers Branch of the National Wild Turkey Federation. George was also an active member of his church, St. John’s Episcopal. George married his second wife Lenna in 2002. George was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He always took his golden retriever, Trixie, everywhere with him. George is survived by his loving wife, Lenna; one brother, James Marshall; and one sister, Linda Marshall of Huntington, W.Va.; his ex-wife and lifelong friend, Marilyn Marshall of Huntington, W.Va.; their eldest daughter and son-in-law, Tabitha Watson and Reginald Watson of Richmond, Va.; their daughter, Sarah Sexton of Huntington, W.Va.; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Keri and Levi Smith of Charleston, S.C.; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Christopher and Julie Drummond of Huntington, W.Va.; grandchildren, Thomasiana, Wesley, Reginald and Erie; step-grandchildren, Grace, Jackson, Ivy, Abraham and Joseph; extended family and friends. The visitation will be at 11 a.m. and the funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Huntington, W.Va. Following the service there will be a reception held at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends and family donate to Middle Run Baptist Church in Frametown, W.Va., St. John’s Episcopal in Huntington, W.Va., or the National Wild Turkey Federation.
Tansy "Jean" McCallister, 71, of Huntington, W.Va., went home to be with God on Sunday, July 25, 2010, at the Hospice House of Huntington. She was born July 20, 1939, to the late Dink and Ruth Mathews. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Paul McCallister; two sons, Dwight Jarrell and Paul McCallister; and a special daughter-in-law, Lynn McCallister; one daughter, Karen Gray; two adopted daughters, Kim Bowen, and Tammy Midkiff and her husband Ray Midkiff; four grandchildren, Michael McCallister and his wife Angie, Tiffany Newberry, Julie McCallister and Kagen Gray; two great-grandchildren, Will McCallister and Drew McCallister; one brother, Kenny Mathews and his wife Jennifer, and their son Luke. We extend a heartfelt thank you to her friend and Dr. Linda Savory. We will celebrate her life the way she lived it with family, friends, love, laughter and lots of food. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Apostolic Life Cathedral, Huntington, W.Va., by Rev. E.S. Harper. JAMES MARVIN "Pete" PETERS, 1934-2010, of New Carlisle, Ohio, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010, in Dayton, Ohio, at age 76. He was born in Ceredo, W.Va., to Francis Walker and Ola Bernice Evelyn Clarkson Peters. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Ann Hampton Peters; son, Douglas (Traci); daughter, Sara Deem (Mark); granddaughter, Shanna Bragg (Robert); sister, Judith Phillips (Bob); half-sister, Elise Bower (Dan). He is also survived by a beloved extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Penny; and half-brother, John W. Peters. Jim graduated from Ceredo-Kenova High School in 1952. He attended Berea College (KY), served in the U.S. Army, and then graduated from Marshall in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Jim earned his Master's Degree in Aerospace Engineering (1966) from the Air Force Institute of Technology. Jim worked for over 30 years at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (OH). After retirement in 1990, he began his second career at C & N Industrial Contractors, where he became the chief financial officer. Jim was an avid Marshall fan. He authored two books on his family's history and genealogy. He served as treasurer for over 10 years at his church. A memorial service will be held at Honey Creek Presbyterian Church in New Carlisle on Saturday, July 31, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the James M. Peters Scholarship Fund at Marshall University, Office of Development. This scholarship is awarded to a Marshall College of Engineering student from the Wayne County each year.
Jordan Michael Robinson, infant son of Justin Robinson and Nena McCoy, went home in the arms of angels Tuesday, July 27, 2010. He is also survived by two sisters, Brooklyn McCoy and MacKenzie Robinson; grandparents, John and Sheila Robinson; great-grandmother, Marcia Wiley; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 30, 2010, at Milton Cemetery with Pastor Kevin Shull officiating. Wallace Funeral Home, Milton is assisting the family with arrangements.
CHESTER SLONE, 55, of Pinetop, husband of Rachel Maggard Slone, died Wednesday at home. He was a retired coal miner. Susan Elizabeth Smith, 48, of Huntington, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2010, in Saint Mary's Medical Center. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny, W.Va. She was born Aug. 22, 1961, in Welch, W.Va., a daughter of the late George W. Asbury Jr. and Norma Sue Ragsdale Asbury. She was a sales clerk for Exxon in Poca, W.Va. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ryan and Carrie Smith of Columbia, S.C.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Falous and Joyce Asbury of Bradley, W.Va., and Dennis and Carol Asbury of Kopperston, W.Va.; two grandsons, Jace and Brodie Smith; her companion, Rodger Hutchinson; and a special friend, Kelli Harbor Bragg. Chapman's Mortuary, Huntington is assisting the family.
