Ohio man pleads not guilty to police beating
HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio man accused of beating a police officer during a traffic stop has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Eric German entered the plea Thursday in Butler County Common Pleas Court in Hamilton, Ohio. The 45-year-old Middletown man is charged with felonious assault on a police officer, impersonating an officer and obstruction of official business. He’s also charged with failure to comply with a police order and failure to stop after an accident.
A judge kept German’s bond at $500,000 and scheduled an Aug. 26 hearing to determine whether German is competent to stand trial.
Video from the officer’s dashboard camera showing the officer being beaten July 21 drew national attention. A prosecutor says the officer will need facial reconstructive surgery.
