1 lane of new I-64 bridge set to open
DUNBAR, W.Va. (AP) — The state Division of Highways says drivers are about to get their first chance to cross the new Interstate 64 bridge at Dunbar.
Spokesman Brent Walker says one lane of the $83 million span is opening Saturday. He says drivers will be able to travel in the slow lane from Dunbar to the MacCorkle Avenue exit in South Charleston.
By opening the lane, construction workers can complete the MacCorkle Avenue onramp and the connection between the South Charleston end of the bridge and existing eastbound lanes of the interstate.
Walker says lots of people are anxious to test the new bridge.
The 760-foot span over the Kanawha River is the longest concrete bridge of its type in North America. Its design allowed the state to skip putting supports into the river.
