W.Va. DMV says interlock use up by 40 percent
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — The Division of Motor Vehicles says the number of West Virginians required to install an interlocking device on their vehicles is up 40 percent since the DUI law was modified last year.
DMV Assistant Commissioner Steve Dale says lawmakers made the device mandatory for motorists charged with first-time driving under the influence with an alcohol content of 0.15 or higher.
The device is attached the ignition and an offender must blow into a tube before starting the vehicle. The vehicle won’t start if it detects alcohol in concentrations of 0.02 or higher.
The state’s legal limit is 0.08.
Dale said between last October and December, 263 people were enrolled in the program, compared to 187 for the same period in 2007 when it was voluntary.
