2 men in truck trapped at western KY surface mine

Oct. 28, 2011 @ 10:44 AM

CENTERTOWN, Ky. (AP) — Crews are working to free two men who became trapped under a rock slide in their truck at a surface mine in western Kentucky.
Ohio County Emergency Management Director Charles Shields says rescuers are trying to make contact with the men and using machinery to remove the rubble.

Shields says the rock fall at Armstrong Coal’s Equality mine occurred around 6:35 a.m. CDT on Friday. The two workers, members of a blasting crew, were driving near a highwall when their truck was inundated by rock and earth.

The condition of the men and their identities was not immediately available.
A spokesman at Armstrong Coal could not be reached for comment Friday morning. Armstrong began operating the mine in December 2008, and it has recorded no previous accidents.
