Two killed in W.Va. 2 accident
LESAGE, W.Va. — Black ice is the likely culprit in an accident that claimed the lives of two people Thursday morning on W.Va. 2.
Cabell County Sheriff Tom McComas said the two-vehicle accident occurred on a bridge just south of Spurlock Creek Road on W.Va. 2 at approximately 9:20 a.m. Thursday. The wreck shut down W.Va. 2, which will remain closed until approximately noon Thursday.
“As a result of the accident, we have two fatalities — occupants of the same vehicle — and a third person who was transported to the hospital with serious injuries,” McComas said.
Emergency crews and accident reconstructionists were on the scene trying to determine how the wreck with the two passenger cars occurred. McComas said those details are not yet known, but black ice appears to be a contributing factor.
“We’re trying to figure it out right now,” McComas said. “The road surface was ice. The bridge was ice-covered and that’s definitely going to be a factor in this accident.”
McComas said the vehicles are pretty extensively damaged and crews were working to extricate the victims.
The names of the victims are not being released, pending notification of family members, McComas added.
