HUNTINGTON — Marshall University football landed a verbal commitment Friday evening from Sandy Creek (Ga.) H.S. senior quarterback Cole Garvin.

Garvin, a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com, passed for 2,733 yards and 20 touchdowns with just seven interceptions as a junior while leading Sandy Creek to the Class AAAA championship in Georgia in 2012.

“We’re really excited about Cole committing today,” Sandy Creek coach Chip Walker said. “Marshall is getting a great young man and he’s going to a program that’s a special program in terms of what is going on up there.”

Walker praised Marshall recruiting coordinator Todd Hartley for his efforts in the state of Georgia.

Marshall was the first NCAA Division I program to offer Garvin a scholarship, Walker said. He had a total of 16 offers.

“Coach Hartley has recruited us and he’s done an outstanding job in the recruitment process of Cole,” Walker said. “They identified him early. He understands Georgia football is special and important to the people of Georgia. They’ve emphasized getting down here and getting the best players from our state and they’ve done a good job.”

The 6-1, 196-pound Garvin leads a Sandy Creek team loaded with prospects. In MaxPreps’ preseason football rankings, Sandy Creek is No. 5 nationally in the Preseason Top 25 poll.

Garvin’s plan was to make a summer decision so he could concentrate on his senior season, Walker said.

“That shows his commitment to being team-first and to the rest of his teammates,” Walker said. “That’s the leadership Cole brings.”

Earlier this year, Garvin was named as the top quarterback at the prestigious Atlanta MVP Camp.

As a sophomore in 2011, Garvin was equally as impressive, throwing for 2,344 yards and 25 touchdowns with seven interceptions for the Patriots.

Sandy Creek is also the former high school for NFL all-pro wide receiver Calvin Johnson.
