West Virginia Coal Miners Appreciation Day Dec. 6

November 06, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

MINGO COUNTY, W.Va. -- West Virginia Coal Miner Appreciation Day has been set, according to Mingo County Young Democrats President Justin Marcum.

Marcum initially drafted the resolution, which began at the West Virginia Young Democrats convention in Wheeling in March. It was recently signed by Governor Joe Manchin.

The resolution will name Dec. 6 as National Miner Day because that is the date of the great coal mining tragedy at Monongah, W.Va. The resolution points out that the Monongah tragedy is recognized as the greatest loss of life in American industrial history.

This resolution honors America's coal miners, Marcum said.

"Coal miners are the backbone of West Virginia and America," Marcum said.

Marcum is a law student at Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, Va., and a former executive board member of the West Virginia Young Democrats.

The resolution was introduced on Nov. 4, 2009, by Rep Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., and Rep. Alan Mollohan, D-W.Va. Similar legislation has been introduced in the Senate by Sens. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., and Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va.
