HUNTINGTON -- Construction on the new $23 million Huntington East Middle School is now 60 percent complete as 2013 begins.

Tom Frye, the clerk of works on the project, said everything should be under roof by the end of the week on the school, which will serve students who now attend Enslow and Beverly Hills middle schools. But there is still plenty of time-consuming work to do inside.

The school, on U.S. 60 and Norway Avenue, should be completed by Sept. 30, although students won't move in until January 2014.

Seventh- and eighth-grade teachers and students will begin the 2013-14 school year at Beverly Hills, and sixth-grade teachers and students will begin the year at Enslow.

The project is about three weeks behind schedule, but some of that can be made up as work moves completely inside.

The jewel of the school is the large art room window which looks out over U.S. 60.

Framing was finished last week, and the windows are expected to be installed this week.

The school will be certified by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program and include several green technologies, such as large windows to maximize natural light, a composter to reuse food waste and computer monitoring stations to show energy usage.

A white rubber material also was used for the roof, which will help reflect light and keep the school cooler in the warmer months.
