Motocross racers take to track at annual event

January 05, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- What has become a gas-powered winter tradition in Huntington revved up for a weekend of competition Friday night at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

The West Virginia Indoor MX Championship hosted its first series of racing for the 2013 championship, which will continue Saturday.

The event, which began in 1987, has become a mainstay in the local motocross calendar because of the popularity of the sport and because of its timing in the year, said Drew Wolfe, promoter with Action Sports.

"The event always has been popular, and in the last year or two, since the economy has improved, the event is getting more popular," Wolfe said. "Part of it is just because so many people love to race, and the other part is because we have this in the dead of winter. People might have a little cabin fever, and they are itching to go out and race, or at least watch a race."

Races will start back up Saturday, Jan. 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the arena.

Tickets are available for purchase at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena box office.
