Two-year-old's name released in stove death
BRANCHLAND -- West Virginia State Police are investigating how a kitchen stove fell onto a 2-year-old boy, leading to his death.
Authorities found the child Monday morning at a house along Pettie Coat Junction Road, a rural route off W.Va. 10 and the Trace Fork of Four Mile Creek Road in Branchland.
The Associated Press, citing various media outlets, identified the child as Chevy Waughtel. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
State Police Sgt. J.L. Joyce said investigators are waiting for a report from the state Medical Examiner's Office before criminal charges are filed. That will determine a cause of death and assist troopers in selecting the appropriate charge.
Joyce described the appliance as a typical kitchen stove. Authorities found it toppled over on the child.
The Associated Press further reports a family member who was watching the boy and several other children was asleep when the accident occurred. Tropers say the floor beneath the stove was deteriorating and unstable.
Due to the ongoing investigation, Joyce declined to provide any more details about the circumstances at the house.
The other children have been removed from the home by Child Protective Services, according to the Associated Press.
