Pullman branches out with dinner, wine tasting

HUNTINGTON -- More than 30 people only needed to travel as far as the Pullman Plaza Hotel to get a taste of authentic French cuisine Friday night.

Executive Chef Thomas Hickey and hotel staff pulled out all of the stops for Paris at the Pullman dinner and wine tasting event, during which patrons not only sampled Hickey's French fare, but they also had the chance to taste wine pairings with each meal courtesy of Chris Jones with Galaxy Distribution Co.

Hickey, who recently came to the hotel after serving as the head chef for the Sheraton Tower Hotel in Boston, said he wanted to give Huntington residents an experience like they never had before.

"What I want to show people in Huntington is that we can make great food here, and there's more here than just a buffet," Hickey said. "Food can be fun. It doesn't always just have to be for fuel. It can be its own experience. It can be entertainment. It's an experience that can have quality in talking with friends while you enjoy it."

The hotel, Hickey said, provides a beautiful atmosphere for such an event, and Crystal Robinson, marketing manager for the hotel, said she hopes the event will be the first of many.

"The goal is to showcase what the hotel can give to the community," Robinson said. "We have a chef that is new to the area, and tonight is a great way to introduce him to Huntington. We are excited to show the community everything we can do."

Joe Mayes has served as the hotel's pastry chef since 2007, and he said Friday's event was only the latest offering in a food culture that is blossoming in Huntington.

"It's important for people to know that it's not just Pullman Plaza Hotel -- it's all of Huntington that has so many more fully-trained culinary professionals than it did just a few years ago," Mayes said. "Huntington really has become a good, quality place to eat because there are a lot of individual places."

The Pullman Plaza Hotel provides full service for lunch and dinner.
