Collis P. Huntington Historical Society is hosting two rail trips
HUNTINGTON -- The Collis P. Huntington Historical Society, Inc. is hosting two rail trips traveling to Washington, D.C., in March and New River Train excursions in October.
The trip to Washington will be aboard private rail cars Sunday, March 24, through Wednesday, March 27.
The Cherry Blossom Express tour departs from Huntington, with a stop in Charleston to pick up passengers, en route to Washington. An early evening arrival is planned after traveling through the New River Gorge, over the Allegheny Mountains and along several rivers.
Highlights of tour include: three nights of lodging at the Holiday Inn Express; four breakfasts; two lunches on train; four dinners, two on train and two in Washington; luxury motorcoach transportation in Washington; touring including the front of the White House, the Washington National Cathedral, monuments tours, a visit to Arlington National Cemetery with a viewing of the changing of the guard and an afternoon at the Smithsonian Institution on the National Mall.
Cost is $769 per person for double occupancy and $869 for single occupancy.
The New River Train excursions are Oct. 19-20 and 26-27. The 300-mile roundtrip journeys to Hinton, W.Va., through the 65-mile-long New River Gorge coincide with the annual Railroad Days Festival.
Organizers say 1,200 seats have already been sold, according to The Associated Press.
Amtrak locomotives and a mixture of 29 Amtrak-approved coaches, lounge cars, parlor cars and glasstop dome-style cars will make up the consist.
The trips leave from Huntington with a stop in St. Albans, W.Va., to take on passengers.
New this year is deluxe coach seating which will include a boxed breakfast and dinner as well as a souvenir.
Dome and Premium seats are limited. Reservations are required.
