W.Va. Crimes Against Children committee praised

Jul. 24, 2013 @ 02:45 PM

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Child-welfare advocates are praising House Speaker Tim Miley for forming a Select Committee on Crimes Against Children to focus on child abuse and neglect.

Wheeling-based Crittenton Services Inc. serves more than 650 women, children and families across West Virginia with residential, outpatient and educational programs.

President Kathy Szafran says most have suffered abuse, neglect or other crimes.

She calls the rising rate of abuse and neglect alarming and the high rate of sexual abuse heartbreaking.

Szafran says children cannot wait longer for help.

Ohio County Republican Erikka Storch says she hopes children will be better served by having the Legislature's year-round attention.

Delegate Linda Phillips of Wyoming County will chair the panel.

It includes members of the House Women's Caucus and Republican state Sen. Donna Boley as a non-voting member.
