Ohio college says employee data posted on Web

November 11, 2008 @ 06:06 AM

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Officials at a community college in Dayton say the names and Social Security numbers of almost 1,000 employees were inadvertently made visible to Web search engines for about a year.

Sinclair Community College on Monday said an Excel spreadsheet with information on about 958 people who worked at the college in 2000 and 2001 was placed in a computer folder by an employee.

Sinclair President Steven Lee Johnson says the employee didn’t realize the folder could be viewed on the Internet.

Another Sinclair employee found the file last Tuesday while doing a Web search. The college says it immediately took down the information. Johnson says there’s no reason to believe anyone else accessed the information.

Sinclair has received no reports of identity theft.
