Fire reported at Special Metals

Jun. 26, 2013 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- No one was injured Tuesday evening when emergency crews responded to a reported fire at Special Metals.

The fire was reported at 6:05 p.m. near a furnace in the strip mill building at the facility, said Huntington Fire Chief Carl Eastham.

There was smoke coming from the facility when emergency responders arrived the scene, said Eastham, but crews were able to contain the fire and cool the furnace using fire extinguishers and other chemical compounds. An emergency response employee with Special Metals said spraying water on the furnace would trigger a dangerous chemical reaction with the hydrogen in the machine.

Eastham said it was unclear how the fire started, but he said it is possible the furnace simply overheated.

The incident was under investigation Tuesday evening.
