Highlawn Elementary to host nutritional event

March 16, 2010 @ 12:00 AM

HUNTINGTON -- Cabell County Schools is partnering with members of the West Virginia Nutrition Network to present "Super Foods for Smart Kids" from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. and 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at Highlawn Elementary.

"With the rate of obesity increasing across the U.S. in our youth, researchers have noticed a steady decline in the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables," said Tim Bender, director of the Marshall University Nutrition Education Project. "Research is showing that our children are eating more processed foods, replacing more healthful foods, like fresh fruits and vegetables, in many homes across the country."

On the day of the event, classrooms of Highlawn Elementary students will move through a series of tables set up in the school. At each table, facilitators from the partner organizations will conduct activities with students that they hope will drive home the importance of good nutrition and exercise to a healthy lifestyle.

Students will have the opportunity to taste a "Blues Buster" smoothie, play games with food models and complete coloring activities, sample various fresh vegetables and low-fat cheeses, and will receive stickers and bookmarks with nutrition information.

"Our programs have come together to spark a change in eating behaviors and physical inactivity," Bender said. "We want to encourage greater consumption of fruits, vegetables and dairy, as well as encourage at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day to aid in the protection of some chronic diseases. We are here to help create a healthier generation of youth."

In addition to the nutrition information, the facilitators will provide teachers with materials to share with students about the importance of physical activity and some ideas for what they can do at school and at home with their families to become strong.
